Minimal Viable Product

Slate was born out of necessity from the daily frustrations of working as a freelance film director in New York City. It’s the first tailored software dedicated to managing the work life of film and photo professionals.

Discovery

Background
A film director and cinematographer, both based in New York, contacted me with their idea to create a product to solve the daily frustrations of managing projects as freelancers. After they explained the pain points, market size and business model, I eagerly accepted the opportunity.
Problem
Film and photo freelancers have no current dedicated software for managing their projects across different stages. Most freelance professionals are working with a Frankenstein combination of notes, Google calendar and whatever space they have in their memory.

Define

Design Goals
Design a minimalistic yet elegant product that addresses the key takeaways from the interviews while including advantages from competitors. The product needs to offer value for each discipline with a small learning curve so it facilitates the freedom for creatives to focus their energy on delivering the project.
Above The Line
Persona
Directors and producers who want to oversee the entire creative project. Perfectionists critical of timelines, equipment, crew and deliverables. Willing to pay a large subscription fee if it reduces the stress of time, energy and money.
Below The Line
Persona
Departments, including assistants, make-up and wardrobe, that care about which days they are scheduled on set. Financially motivated with a hustle mindset. Need for organisation to ensure they get paid. Only willing to pay a small subscription fee for software.
Assumption Matrix
Based on the user personas created from focus group interviews, we can map the desired features onto an assumption matrix to determine what should be included in the Minimum Viable Product (MVP).

Develop

Low-fidelity Prototypes
To get the product to market quickly, the team opted to translate fat marker sketches to high-fidelity designs.

Bonus

Designing The Waitlist
After completing the MVP designs, the team needed a way to funnel leads of interested users. The team tasked me with designing a waitlist in 1 week.
Design Brief
A 3D interactive page with assets related to the film and photo industry was requested by the team. The main idea was Slate needed to appeal to a target audience of creatives and they love 3D shit...
Design Process
The assets were created in Illustrator and Blender. Spline was used to animate the assets, and the final product was mocked up in Figma.
