Discovery

Study
Leveraging my experience as both a Vinted user and a seasoned product designer, I conducted a study to update sections of the app without requiring a complete redesign. My focus was on how to improve the design with a user-centered approach to address legibility and visibility.
Legibility
While WCAG doesn't set a specific minimum font size or recommend particular typefaces, adhering to a few general best practices ensures optimal readability. Body text should be a minimum of 12 points (pt) or approximately 16 pixels (px), and it's advisable to avoid using text sizes smaller than 9pt (12px).

Design Updates

Home Page
  • Removed the top banner as it occupies a large amount of page real estate.
  • "Recommended for you" carousel is now a vertical scroll to follow the design pattern for search results.
  • Font sizing has been updated from 14px to 16px for readability.
  • Item favorites are now indicated by a badge to signify an interactive element for users.
  • Reduced navbar elements to 24px to free up a few more pixels of content space.

Item Page
  • Updated vertical information hierarchy to image, price, item description and lastly user information.
  • Added percentage discount indicator for price.
  • Interactive badge elements on the right side with a counter.
  • Heart represents favorites.
  • Auction mallet represents user offers.
  • Removed "Includes Buyer Protection" section because it is confusing and would make more sense to include it in the checkout phase as a user.
  • Increased "Ask seller" button size and added "View profile" button.

Retrospect

Results
Overall feedback for the design updates was very positive, despite the small sample size of 6 users compared to the active user base on Vinted. Notably, all users preferred the updated designs. The project demonstrated how addressing legibility and visibility problems can improve user satisfaction without the need for a full redesign.
Takeaways
A/B testing the updated designs on a larger pool would reveal better findings. While this study exclusively addresses the light mode, it's worth noting that Vinted's current dark mode fails to meet WCAG standards for contrast.
